diy dad’s day gifts

So, you have downloaded and completed your free printable telling Dad how and why he is so fabulous. If you want another little something special to include with the story, why not try making a personalised plate or cup? All you need is an oven safe cup or plate and a permanent marker.  Drawn on your design (you might want to do a practice run on paper first!) then bake in the oven at 175C for about 30-40 minutes.  Voila!

Here’s some inspiration I found on pinterest …

fab ideas – cupcake paper storage

I don’t know about you, but my pantry is sprinkled with random stacks of cupcake wrappers, left over from various baking crusades. We are LOVING this fab idea of storing them in a spaghetti jar – genius (and good lookin’)!

meet a mama – belinda from nest design studio

I have ‘met’ Belinda through various avenues in my business and think she has terribly fabulous style.  So, of course, I had to share her with you guys … here you go!belinda portrait

Tell us a bit about you, fabulous you!
I’m Belinda from Nest Design Studio and I have a fabulous job designing nurseries and rooms for little ones throughout Australia (and internationally!).  I am married to a handsome man, Matt, and we have 2 handsome little boys; Hugh (4) and Charles (2).  We live in Bendigo in Victoria.

Who inspires you?
I get inspiration from everywhere……I’m not sure there is 1 particular person or place.

What can’t you live without?
Obviously I should start with my family!  But there are lots of other things as well….fat coke, wine, my mothers group, my girlfriends (and the occasional girls night out!) and body balance.

Do you have a favourite blog/s?
I subscribe to way to many but I love reading The Design Hunter and The Lennoxx for design.  I also love Modern Parents, Messy Kids for great kids ideas.

How do you like to spend your spare time?
I haven’t had spare time for a long time, so I’m not sure!  When the boys aren’t around, I get stuck into designing rooms.  I have always loved reading books and I do enjoy going to the gym (when I can get there!).

Best time saving or sanity saving idea/tip for mamas?
Online shopping is a godsend!  Be it the grocery, clothes or presents…….saves getting kids in and out of car seats and any arguments!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully our family will be complete (I think I’ve got room for 1 more baby!) and really enjoying the kids!  We are fixing up a shack out at our farm for weekend visits so I imagine in 5 years we will be spending family time out there.

As far as my business goes, I hope it’s much of the same.  I’ve been lucky enough to have had wonderful exposure and press (both nationally and internationally) and would love to be able to devote more time to designing rooms.

What is your favourite quote?
If you were to ask my sons, it would be ‘calm down’!  Whilst it’s not a glamorous quote, I regularly say ‘suck it and see’… everything you want to achieve is worth having a go!

Where can we find you?
You mean when I’m not indulging in a fat coke or wine?

water colour painting (with a twist)

I’m sorry I’ve been a tad quiet over the past couple of weeks.  Internet hassles have made it trickier than usual to post fab ideas here.  So, now I need to make it up to you!

Let’s start with this gorgeous little project using water colours and lemon juice.  As you will see below, lemon juice has a terribly fabulous effect if you leave it on a watercolor painting. Give it a few minutes to soak, dab away with a tissue, and some crazy shapes are left as a result. You can find all the details over at the ‘art projects for kids’ blog.

Happy painting peeps! x

Firstly, I’m terribly sorry I’m a day late with this announcement however we have only had intermittent internet all week – not ideal for an internet based business, but anyhooo, we are all fixed now!

Once again, it was a terribly tricky choice with lots of gorgeous images of your little ones living a rudy and the dodo life – creating, exploring, painting, playing and using their imaginations! This week’s winner is tarsh97 for this fab entry showing her girls building a cubby and preparing for predicted rains.  I used to LOVE doing stuff like this as a kid!

marble reward system

We’ve been having a bit of trouble getting to school on time this year.

Actually, ONE of us (who shall remain nameless) has been having a bit of trouble getting READY for school, therefore making it impossible for everyone else to get to school, and other various destinations, on time.  It has been going on all year and I am at the end of my rope.

So, after various (unsuccessful) attempts at rewards and incentive programs to improve school dressing times, we have now come up with the marble system.

Each little person has a jar or box with their initial stuck on it.  Something clear is great so they can see their progress.

marble rewards

We have collectively agreed on ‘areas for improvement’ for each child, and we also have a special jar for Daddy who is working on improving some of his ‘words’ 😉

Rather than rewarding them for general good behaviour (which we do ways other than the marble reward system) we are remaining focussed on just one issue per child.  We are currently concentrating on improving;

–          Eating all my dinner

–          Getting dressed and ready for school in a timely manner

–          Turning off technology the first time I am asked

Each time one of these is achieved by the relevant child, they get a marble.  When they reach ten marbles they get a reward of their choice – for us that is a particular (small) toy or book they have been wanting, or $5 to save towards something bigger they would like.

It’s simple and achievable, meaning everyone can maintain interest, including me.  I have to admit, some previous reward systems have fallen by the wayside as I have not been committed to enforcing or maintaining them!  Sound familiar?

This one seems to be working. We’ve actually made it to school on time every day since we started it.  Hallelujah!
